7 Mistakes That No Graphic Designer Should Ever Make

The world of graphic design is a beautiful and inspiring affair, but as with all professions there’s always room for errors. And some of these errors really irritate me!

That’s why I’m going to take you through a few of the most common errors which may be preventing you from becoming that pro graphic designer.

  1. Keep Your Clients Updated

Highly polished communication skills are the order of the day when dealing with your clients, but many graphic designers fail to achieve this.

Sure, sometimes it may feel as though you’ve got a million and one things to prioritise on a project, but without client feedback you can easily head in the wrong direction.

Clients want to be involved – after all they’re ones getting their wallets out – so keeping them updated allows them to feel more confident that a project is progressing smoothly.

  1. Stay Away from Popular Stock Images

You’ve just found the perfect stock image for your amazing new design, but then you notice that it’s already had 500,000 downloads. Do you really think this is going to help your design stand out?

No, it’s not!

It may be frustrating, but you need to search for the less popular stock images to ensure your creation is unique and fresh. And if you can’t find that unique image try creating it yourself with a camera.

  1. Don’t Neglect Your Spelling

If there’s one mistake which really grinds my gears then it’s badly proofread work!

You could design the most innovative logo known to man, but if you misspell the company name then you’re going to look very amateurish. Of course, the client may just ask you to redesign it, but in the long term they’re unlikely to come back for more.

And, yes, not everyone is a king of grammar, but just double and triple checking your work is sometimes enough. If you really do struggle then ask a fellow designer to quickly cast their eyes over it.

  1. Style Outlasts Fashion

Trends in graphic design are a great indicator of what the flavour of the day is, but they’re not always conducive to a long lasting design.

I’ll definitely tap into the zeitgeist when designing an infographic as it’s going to be a relatively short lived piece of content. However, when it comes to a logo that a client may want to use for the next ten years then you need to make sure it’s timeless rather than screaming MADE IN 2015!

  1. Respect Your Fonts

Fonts can really make or break your project, so you need use them wisely and responsibly.

I’ve noticed that some graphic designers tend to stick to just a couple of fonts, but this is a big mistake. It shows that their design skills are always going to be limited as familiarity quickly creeps into their designs, so, please, broaden your font range!

When it comes to individual designs, though, you certainly want to hold your horses when it comes to using fonts. Stick to two or three different fonts as too many may look confusing and will jar the viewer’s attention.

  1. Indigestible Content

Designs are intricate creatures and the people viewing them are even more intricate with a ready-made set of aesthetic wants and needs.

And if you don’t tap into this you’re going to fail to convey your client’s message.

What I always recommend here is that you keep your ‘call to action’ as the main focal point. Don’t force people to dart their eyes all around your design as it will confuse them.

Communicate the basics quickly and efficiently, though, and you’ll have a killer design in your hands.

  1. Remain Organised

It’s not a myth that clutter leads to a decline in productivity, it’s a fact!

I’ve seen too many graphic designers struggling to complete projects as their workspace is in a permanent state of chaos. Brilliant ideas become lost amongst endless scribbles and scraps of papers, whilst poorly labelled computer files are just as troublesome.

Tidy your workspace up at the end of every day and make sure you stick to a simple format for labelling computer files all nicely stored in project specific folders.
